Entry for December 24, 2007 part 3

The Ohio State football team appeared to be out of the BCS Championship hunt, as they were ranked below Missouri and West Virginia. But on the last night of the season, the Mountaineers were upset by Pittsburgh in an incredible game, and Oklahoma beat Missouri for the Big 12 Championship. So, Ohio State and Louisiana State ended up ranked 1 and 2.

LSU has two losses (both in overtime) but are a worthy opponent after completing a rugged Southeastern Conference schedule, and winning the SEC Championship game. Ohio State is the Big 10 Champion. Interestingly, OSU is winless in bowl games against the SEC, and we haven’t forgotten being routed by Florida in last year’s national title game. I am expecting a great game.

The Blue Jackets have been struggling offensively since I last posted. The goaltending has been fine, but Columbus has not been able to get many pucks in the net. They have had a long stretch of home games in December, and unfortunately, have not been able to capitalize on the favorable scheduling.

Both Ohio State and Kentucky have struggled with their young basketball teams. UK has really raised some eyebrows with its 5-5 record. Ohio State showed some brilliance in its most recent game, a 62-49 win over Florida. I think a large amount of patience is going to be required with both schools.

I got DSL here at the house right after our return from Florida. With the purchase of a Lenovo dual-core laptop back before Thanksgiving, I am in much better shape for computer power here at home.

With my Miata having over 100, 000 miles on it, and some body damage as described earlier, I decided not to put any more money into it, and to look for a replacement. A fellow member of our Miata club had a low-miles 1999 that he had nicely fixed up. He had purchased a Porsche, and put his Miata up for sale. I bought it from him after we returned from Florida. It is a dark blue with a tan top and tan leather interior. It has a number of other features that my green ’99 does not have, including a HardDog roll bar. We’re looking forward to getting back active with our Miata club.

While in Florida, we made another trip to the east coast where we saw the Cape Florida lighthouse, the Gold Coast Railroad Museum, and the Homestead-Miami race track. Unfortunately, the guest center at the track was closed due to Firestone conducting tire tests. We could hear Indi cars running the track, but were not able to see anything.

We like to go for nature walks while in Florida. The Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a short drive from the condo we use. You can take a 2-mile hike on the boardwalk, and get a good feel for the Everglades, and the plantlife and wildlife that inhabits it. This year, we also visited the Six-Mile Cypress Slough (“slew”) Preserve in Ft. Myers. The boardwalk there is just a tad over a mile, and is free (although there is a charge for parking). Next time, we plan to visit the “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island. This one has both “drive thru” trails and walking trails, and encompasses over 6500 acres.

We always take an airboat ride in the Everglades when we visit southwest Florida. Although a bit pricey at $35-$40 per person for an hour, we think it is a lot of fun. On this trip, we saw several alligators and a couple of alligator nests. The boat captain is essentially an “entertainer” and we’ve had the good fortune to ride with a couple good ones.

Bonnie and I spent a week in Naples, Florida, over the last few days of November and the first few days of December. When I travel, I like to get around and see the sights, so we drove over 1100 miles while we were there.

After visiting my next-door neighbors who spend winters in Lake Placid, we went to the east coast where I got to have an “eyeball QSO” with WY5I, who is net control station for the Rotten Apple Group on the 40-meter amateur band in the morning.

Donn has made a miraculous recovery from a severe head injury several years ago. He was in a coma for awhile, then had to relearn many of the things we all learn to do as a child. A former executive for Pratt & Whitney, Donn now lives in Port St. Lucie where a friend helped him assemble a beautiful ham station. Communicating with hams around the world helped in Donn’s recovery. After many years of brief chats with him in the mornings on the way to work, it was great to finally meet him and hear more about his amazing story.

Oops, I did it again.

Well, I have once again gotten behind in inputting to my blog. It has been an extremely busy few weeks. So busy, in fact, that I forgot to pay a credit card bill, and incurred a $35 late fee as a result. That is something I NEVER do. I am off work for several days over the holidays, so I plan to get caught up right now.

Most importantly on this Christmas Eve, I want to wish all readers a Happy and Joyous Holiday Season.
