Happy New Year!

December 31, 2008

I want to wish all readers a Happy New Year!

Ohio State got off to a good start in the Big Ten, knocking off Iowa 68-65. The Bucks now go on the road to Minnesota and Michigan State.

The Blue Jackets recorded their second straight shutout winning Monday night in Los Angeles 2-0. Tonight Columbus visits Anaheim for the second of six-straight road games.

I visited Tom, K4IE this morning. He has built something called a linearly loaded vertical that he has used sucessfully on 80 and 160 meters. I would like to build one of these myself for 80.

Ohio State is not the only team to be embarrassed at home recently. A fine young Georgetown team beat Connecticut in Hartford tonight.

The Blue Jackets turned things around last night in beating Philadelphia 3-0. Steve Mason got his third career shutout.

I have posted a bunch of pictures that I took at horse farms during the summer of 2003. On my Flickr page, look at the “Horse Farms” collection.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas!

The Blue Jackets have not scored a goal since Manny Malhotra had that goal taken away in overtime in Dallas. Losses to Phoenix and Los Angeles have brought the string of consecutive losses to three. The Jackets host Philadephia tonight before going back out on the road.

Ohio State just suffered its first loss of the season as West Virginia won big in Columbus. The Mountaineers were another opponent in common with Kentucky. The Cats beat West Virginia in a tournament in Las Vegas earlier this season.

Kentucky had what appeared to be an easy breather against Florida Atlantic today, but only won by 7. The Cats’ defensive intensity was lacking in this game.

A couple of key injuries that are going to “hurt”.

Derick Brassard dislocated his right shoulder in a fight in the Columbus-Dallas game Thursday night. He has been one of the top rookies in the NHL so far this season. Not sure yet how long he’ll be out.

David Lighty broke his foot in the Jacksonville-Ohio State game.

Earlier today, Ohio State beat Iona and Kentucky beat Appalachian State.

Speaking of the Columbus-Dallas game, the Jackets rallied from two goals down to tie it. In overtime, Manny Malhotra appeared to have the game winner which the on-ice officials declared to be a goal. But, the Toronto War Room overruled, saying the puck was put in with a “distinct kicking motion”. Video replay indicated that it was an extremely poor call.

The Jackets visit Phoenix tonight.

The Blue Jackets picked up a huge overtime win over San Jose in Nationwide Arena last night. That is 5 in-a-row at home. Tonight Columbus will be in Dallas.

Ohio State stayed unbeaten by beating Jacksonville last night.

I operated the ARRL Ten-Meter contest over the weekend. Of course, ten meters is not in particularly good shape at this point in the sunspot cycle. But I did manage to make 68 contacts. I used my Yaesu FT-817 running 5 watts.

I am now on vacation until January 5th. One would think that I will be able to do a better job keeping this blog up-to-date. Then again, maybe not :-).

I got my first look at the Kentucky women’s team last Friday night as they lost to East Tennessee State. The Cats really missed Carly Ormerod who was out with an injury.

The Ohio State men have stayed unbeaten by beating Butler 54-51. The Bucks take on Jacksonville tonight.

UK notched wins against Mississippi Valley and Indiana.

After a miserable road trip out west, the Blue Jackets have won four-in-a-row at home with wins over Nashville and the Islanders. Tonight’s visit by San Jose will be a severe challenge to this streak. Steve Mason has continued to look awesome.

Lexington GlobalTuner

December 15, 2008

I have put an Icom IC-PCR1000 receiver on the web for public use via the GlobalTuners web site. You must register with GT to use their receivers, but registration is free.

Currently, the receiver only has an antenna for VHF/UHF, so it will work best on those frequencies. In the future I hope to add a shortwave antenna.

Santa will be talking to hospitalized children Monday and Tuesday night via ham radio. You can listen to Santa and the kids on the Lexington GlobalTuner. They will start around 6:00 PM EST Monday Dec. 15 and 6:30 PM EST on Tuesday Dec. 16.

Ohio State traveled to Indianapolis yesterday and beat seventh-ranked Notre Dame. The Bucks have raised some eyebrows this season with two away-from-home wins over ranked opponents.

Michigan evidently has a team to be reckoned with as they have beaten UCLA and Duke this year.

The Blue Jackets will play in Anaheim tonight. They are currently 0-2 on a western road trip.
