Wrapping up June

Today was the last day of work for a lot of my co-workers who were recently laid off. Some of them are now retired, others hope to come back and do contract work as I do. It brought back a lot of memories of June 30, 2010 which was my last day.

Bonnie and I rode the Belle of Cincinnati last Saturday. It was my first time being on a boat in the Ohio River.

Last weekend was amateur radio “Field Day” weekend. As last year, I operated from home but used battery power. My power output was “QRP” (5 watts). I made 105 contacts in the 4 1/2 hours I had to devote to the effort.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are taking radical steps to stop the bleeding. They acquired Jeff Carter from Philadelphia, one of the top centers in the league. So a top line including Carter and Rick Nash should be interesting to see in the upcoming season. Columbus gave up it’s first-round draft pick, other draft picks and other players to get the Carter deal done. Most if not all of this year’s free agents were told to move on, and a bunch of new players will likely come on board. Columbus had originally been using draft picks to bring in young players, but it was apparently decided that more veteran help was needed immediately.
