A Beacon of Hope

September 13, 2011

The fruits of my labor on Labor Day were that I now have a 10-meter beacon on the air. It will generally be on continuously except for when storms are forecast. It is on 28226.8, running 5 watts to a ground-mounted Gap Eagle vertical. The rig is a Yaesu FT-450AT.

I’m not expecting much from Ohio State and Kentucky in football this year but the teams are a combined 4-0 so far.

Last Saturday, MAC teams visited Columbus and Lexington and led awhile. Kentucky came from a 13-3 deficit to beat Central Michigan 27-13. Slow starts seem to be common since Joker Phillips started coaching here, and it is a problem that needs to get fixed.

Toledo might be the class of the MAC and they gave the Buckeyes a scare. OSU won 27-22 but the Rockets were driving deep in Buckeye territory as the game ended.

Wrapping up August

September 2, 2011

As I type this we are in another hot spell. I am hoping this is the last extreme heat of the summer. It got up to 104 F here today. A cold front will work its way through Sunday or Monday and leave some pretty nice weather in its wake.

I have established a part-time web cam at It will either be looking out the shack window or be pointed toward the main operating position of my radio room. Audio will typically be whatever is going on in the shack.

I did not see the game but Kentucky played Western Kentucky last night in Nashville. Apparently the offense was extremely poor. Ohio State has suspended 3 more players for its opener tomorrow against Akron.
