September is almost over

September 26, 2012

September is just about history and since I’ll be busy the rest of the month, it’s time for an update.

Football is unfolding about as I expected. Kentucky is terrible, and has now lost 26 in-a-row to Florida. The Cats lost to Western Kentucky in overtime which will go down as one of the worse losses in school history. Unless there is a major turnaround soon, I expect Joker Phillips to be released at the end of the season.

Ohio State is 4-0 but has not played tough competition. The Bucks were challenged in 3 of the 4 games. Urban Meyer’s first Big Ten game as coach of the Buckeyes is Saturday in East Lansing. I see the game as a virtual tossup.

I joined the “smart phone generation” as Bonnie gave me an iPhone 3GS. It’s a great phone, but you’d be surprised how often I forget to take it with me when I leave in the morning.

I have been making good progress in getting the radio gear going in my RAV4. I am using Hamsticks as the HF antenna, and have made some contacts on 40m. But there is more tweaking that I want to do. I’ve had the VHF/UHF side up and running pretty well for some time.

September is generally a pretty good time for propagation on the ham bands, as the time around the Spring and Fall Equinox is usually pretty good. The North American QRP CW Club (NAQCC) September Operating Challenge was to make ten “ragchews” (contacts lasting 20 minutes or more) using QRP CW. I completed the challenge last night. I am planning to spend some time operating the CQ WorldWide RTTY Contest this weekend. It is a 48-hour contest, but I will only operate a fraction of that.

Happy Labor Day

September 3, 2012

I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday. It has been a wet weekend here beginning yesterday afternoon, due to the remnants of Hurricane Isaac. I’ve received over 2 inches of rain so far.

I have made a couple videos demonstrating how to use the Lexington GlobalTuners. They are here:

Each video runs about 18 minutes.

The Urban Meyer era at Ohio State opened Saturday with a 56-10 win over Miami of Ohio. I did not get to see the game.

Yesterday, Louisville beat Kentucky 32-14. Kentucky showed some skill on the offensive side of the ball, but the defense did not look good at all.

To me, the big game of the weekend was Michigan vs. Alabama in Arlington, Texas, but the Tide manhandled the Wolverines.
