Blue Jackets Still In The Hunt

January 13, 2019

I got somewhat pessimistic about the Blue Jackets in December as they won only three of six home games in-a-row in December. But Columbus has won 10 and lost 6 since my December posts, and this keeps them in third place in the Metropolitan division. They are four points behind Washington. Since my last post they had two games against Washington, a 4-0 loss and a 2-1 overtime win last night.

In 2018 we set a record here for the most rainfall in a year. But we have still not had a “significant” snow requiring the snow blower or snow shovel. I’d love it if it stayed that way.

Basketball Craziness

January 13, 2019

The basketball season started out reasonably enough, but a couple teams have started to struggle.

The Kentucky men are doing reasonably well. Since my posts in December, the Cats lost a game in New York to Seton Hall. This was followed by a road loss in Tuscaloosa. But with only 3 losses on the season, and big wins over North Carolina and Louisville, the future still looks bright.

The Ohio State men were 12-1 as the old year ended, which included a win over UCLA. But January has been disaster so far. It started with a home loss to Michigan State. The Spartans are having their usual good year, but you hate to let them beat you at home. This was followed by two road losses, to Rutgers and Iowa. So, the Buckeyes are 2-3 in the league.

Similarly, the Kentucky women were 13-1 as the year ended. A loss in Starkville was not a surprise, as Mississippi State is quite good again this year. The Cats then went to Knoxville and won for only the fourth time in history, 73-71. But, today, with players out, Ole Miss upset the Wildcats who are now 2-2 in the SEC. A home loss to a team like the Rebels is not something you want if you think you have a chance at a conference title.

The Ohio State women are rebuilding and are 5-8 on the season. They upset Indiana the other night for their first Big Ten win of the year.

A Happy New Year’s Day Here

January 13, 2019

December was very busy for me, as Bonnie and I were babysitting her granddaughter, and I started work on remodeling my kitchen. I didn’t get much else done, but there is sports news to report.

Both Kentucky and Ohio State were in New Year’s Day bowls, and both won. The Wildcats hadn’t played on New Year’s Day in years. UK took a 27-7 lead on Penn State in the Citrus Bowl, then held on for a 27-24 victory. The Cats’ final record for the years was 10-3, the first 10-win season since 1977.

Similarly, the Buckeyes jumped out to a big lead over Washington in the Rose Bowl before hanging on for a 28-23 win. It was the last game for Urban Meyer, who is retiring due to health issues. Ryan Day took over the head coaching job on January 2nd.
