February Wrapup

March 4, 2021

After a cold and snowy mid-February, we’re on the upswing with several dry days and normal temperatures.

I wish I could say my sports teams are on an upswing. The Blue Jackets have 23 points in 24 games, having lost five in a row to end Februrary.

Kentucky men’s basketball is still well below .500 at 8-15. The Cats had another three-game winning streak in mid-Feburary, with wins over Auburn, Vanderbilt and a good Tennessee team. But UK is 0-2 since then. Alabama wrapped up the regular season conference title for the first time in awhile. After South Carolina visits Saturday, the SEC tournament will start next week.

The UK women finished in a tie for fifth in the SEC, and are the #5 seed in this week’s SEC tournament in Greenville, South Carolina. Two losses to an unheralded Ole Miss team in February really hurt the Cats in the league standings. A reasonable showing in Greenville may earn Kentucky a #4 seed in the NCAA tournament, and the right to host the first two rounds.

A lot of pundits had penciled in Ohio State as a #1 seed, but then the Bucks went out and lost three in a row, including home losses to Michigan and Iowa. The Michigan matchup was a great game, and OSU lost it with a stupid turnover late in the second half. The Buckeyes host Illinois Saturday afternoon to wrap up the regular season before heading off to the Big Ten tournament. Kyle Young has been out due to injury, and they have missed the big fella.

The Ohio State women also lost three in a row to end February. Friday night’s game against Rutgers will end the season as OSU has self-imposed a ban on post-season play this year.
